I’ve been strongly influenced by the commercial art of the ’50s and ’60s. One of the traditions of that time was the Pin-up painting. They may have been the “soft core” of their time, but today the traditional pin-up looks wide-eyed and innocent. In fact, it appears to me that the pin-up girl was painted in with a sense of worship, like a goddess. To me this form seems ripe for innovation. I enjoy putting angels and prophets, and even Jehovah Himself in the same context as these women who bring back memories of the 50s. I often illustrate Biblical stories with these paintings. like Eve in the Garden (“Trouble in Paradise,” or “Sussanah and the Elders”. I am tipping my hat to the illustrators of the Fifties as well as the tradition of religious painting.
